In the beginning...

Part of me hopes nobody's reading this. Part of me hopes people are reading this...but whatever.
So I'm a sophmore premed bio major yada yada at Cornell... aspiring surgeon/medical missionary surgeon, but that's a long ways away. I have no idea what will become of this, how often or how much detail I will write, so we'll just see what happens.
I read a book where a doctor gave 3 of his interns tape recorders to make recordings of thoughts from their internship, and I decided it would be cool to keep a record somewhere, so I can go back and laugh at myself sometime in the future. Here be said record.

so... at the moment, I am obsessive about anatomy and medical terminology... I have a skeleton model, several anatomy/medical terminology books and flashcard-type things, and a cadaver dissection guide. This collection will increase in size in 7 days when it becomes Christmas and my mom gets me something else of the sort... she always does. :)
my goal is to learn a large chunk of anatomy and medical termnology before I get to gross anatomy, becase stupid Cornell doesn't offer A&P to anyone but nutrition majors (Whose idea was THAT???)
so I like to randomly pick a muscle group and memorize all the muscles... last year one day was quadricep day and I repeated to myself a million times "vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, rectus femoris" until it stuck.
however obsessed with anatomy and thrilled I am to even think about the idea of surgery, my grades depress me... I am convinced that people with my GPA just dont get into med school... but we'll see. I'm trusting that if God wants me in med school, I'll be in med school. Easier said than done.

I've finished 3 semesters at Cornell, and a premed club I'm in visited SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, and I decided that I wanted to go there... so now I'm thinking I'm going to apply early at the end of this year so I don't have to go through the whole MCAT/AMCAS thing....we shall see. Here's where my doubts about my GPA come into play.

people frustrate me... everyone from home assumes because I got straight A+s in high school, I'll also get them in college... sooooo not the case! I tell people my GPA isn't as high as I would like and they say "what is it... 3.9?" no....not even close!

At the moment (during summer and winter breaks at least) I work in a local ER at a small hospital near my house as a patient care technician...similar to a nurse's aid. I get to draw blood, do EKGs, splint, bandage...fun things like that... and not so fun things like the whole bed pan for an 88 year old woman or hold the head of a screaming 2 year old with a laceration in his eyebrow... not that watching the suturing isn't fascinating... but my traps KILL when it's all over. ;)

well that's enough for now... until next time.
